Students who successfully complete the Level 4 Certificate in Corporate Governance qualification are eligible to become affiliated members and continue to benefit from the knowledge and support of our governance and compliance community.

Summary

This introductory Level 4 course is broadly based, covering the principles of good governance across many different sectors. You will develop a strong core knowledge of corporate governance frameworks and codes, and better placed to navigate governance structures, help mitigate potential issues, and support your organisation's governance needs.  

Entry

This programme is open entry, with no prior qualifications required, and suitable if you are living or working in the UK or internationally.

If you work in a role with governance responsibilities including supporting roles, such as a secretarial assistant, executive assistant or governance officer, this course can help improve your performance and value to your organisation.

Content

This qualification will help you better understand:

  • The role of the board and company secretary 
  • How to support and engage with the board on legal, financial and regulatory issues
  • Frameworks and principles of governance and how to apply the relevant codes
  • Knowledge on key players in governance and decision making complexities
  • The best ways to manage risk

There are four modules covering the following topic areas:

  • General principles of corporate governance
  • The board, shareholders and corporate reporting
  • Board procedure and governance administration
  • Risk governance

Study

ICSA recommends approximately 200 hours study time for the course across 6-9 months. Please note that if you intend to enrol onto this course after 1 November, you will need to contact mgarnham@icsa.org.uk.

Assessment of the course is via one exam (3 hours with 15 minutes reading time) and can be taken in June and November each year. The exam paper contains a mixture of short- and extended-answer questions with a pass mark of 50%.

The syllabus, sample assessment materials and study text will be available in November 2018. 

When registering for the course you must pick one of the next two exam sessions. The first exam session is June 2019.
