I have worked in various company secretarial roles in the financial services sector for about four years and currently work for an unlisted public limited company as their Assistant Company Secretary. I have been working towards gaining the ICSA CSQS qualification during this time.
Prior to this I left college at 18 and travelled for five years; I decided to go to University as a mature student in 2005 and graduated with 1st class BA (Hons) Business Studies in 2008 and went on to gain a European Law LLM in 2010, which helped me embark on my career in company secretarial.
Doing the ICSA CSQS exams has been hard work but very rewarding.
It undoubtedly makes me a better company secretary, as the modules feed directly into what I do in practice every day and having that knowledge at your fingertips is essential when working in a fast-paced environment where the legal and regulatory landscape is constantly changing.
It is definitely a challenging career choice, however the variety of work involved and the unique position of the company secretary within an organisation is what keeps me motivated.I believe that the company secretary has a vital role to play in the future of governance. With the ICSA as a driving force for awareness, it is also a profession that has a strong and increasingly distinguished profile.
