After graduating from university with a social sciences degree, I was unsure what career I wanted to embark on. While I discovered the role of the company secretary by chance, I thought that the role seemed interesting and broad and decided to undertake the Chartered Secretaries Qualifying Scheme. I have not been disappointed!
Undertaking the exams required a lot of commitment and perseverance, but the qualification has not only provided me with opportunities, but has been useful in my day-to day role.
I am currently Assistant Company Secretary at Network Rail and I am involved in a broad range of work from board support, annual reporting and corporate governance related matters. All organisations are different and I enjoy applying the theory into the actual.
ICSA offers personal support to members and you can engage with ICSA as little or much as you choose. I recently participated in the ICSA/Henley Business School Research Project on the future role of the company secretary.
I also find the evening members’ briefings a good opportunity to hear updates on recent developments and network with fellow members. The ICSA 2013 summer party at Penguin Beach in London Zoo was also good fun!
