Employers can monitor personal internet use at work without breaching human rights

In January 2016, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) considered the case of Barbulescu v Romania. Barbulescu had been employed as an engineer and used a Yahoo messenger business account. His employer accidentally discovered that he had been using this account to send personal messages to his brother and financee relating to his health and sex life. He was dismissed for breaching his employment contract and brought a claim for unfair dismissal.
