The coming together of two very different cultures, priorities and appetites for innovation and risk can present opportunities for both partners.
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust (OUH) is one of the largest University Teaching Hospitals in the UK with a turnover of nearly £900 million and more than 11,000 staff. The OUH has to work within the NHS’ complex legislative and regulatory requirements, constrained financial envelope and under significant public scrutiny. It is important that efficiency and productivity is maximised and innovative approaches adopted to deliver high quality care. The trust recognised that there is a limit to how far it could improve systems to meet these constraints alone and has developed a number of partnerships to support these aims and to help it achieve its strategic objectives (see box on page 31).
