Research suggests neither board size nor basic compositional factors explain performance

Last year’s report from the Parliamentary Commission on the collapse of HBOS was a salutary lesson for those involved in the recruitment of board members. Sir Ronald Garrick, the deputy chair, told the commission that the board was ‘by far and away the best I ever sat on… openness, transparency, high intellect, integrity, good working relations between the chairman and the chief executive, and a suitable diversity of background, mix of experience and expertise to maximise effectiveness’....
