Could you help to improve education in Nottingham by volunteering to become a member at a multi-academy trust?  Nova Education Trust seeks a new member.

Members provide independent oversight to the work of the board of trustees to ensure suitable accountability for decision making and strategy. As multi-academy trusts (MATs) grow and develop, they face significant challenges. This role enables professionals to use skills and experience gained throughout their career to help trusts across England and improve the life chances of young people. All roles are pro bono.

The trust

Nova Education Trust grew out of Toot Hill (secondary) School which was judged as Outstanding at its last inspection.  Since 2011 the organisation has successfully support other schools, both primary and secondary, to help them secure the educational standards their families and staff wanted. The trust has taken several schools with significant challenges and brought about lasting improvements. The trust comprises 15 academies (five primaries, nine secondaries and one sixth-form college).

The schools in the trust’s portfolio work in a range of socio-economic contexts including some which serve very deprived communities.  The trust has a mix of schools which includes infant, junior, through-primary, secondary (some with and some without sixth forms) and a sixth form college, as well as some new free schools which are growing year on year.

The trust is preparing for its next strategic development and may well seek to expand further.  Trustees are mindful of the risks having taken several schools which may need substantial capital investment.  However, the Board is keen not to ‘stand still’ and fully intends to balance the risks with opportunities to develop further.

Person specification

The board seeks a member with previous experience in

  • Education Leadership
  • HR/Organisation Development
  • Strategic Partnerships

Applicants should have an extensive and demonstrable background in senior leadership roles, with strategic vision and knowledge of the non-executive director role. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan.

What’s involved?

Members have a similar role to the shareholders in a company limited by shares. They provide high-level oversight and scrutiny of the work of the trust board.

Most notably, members:

  • define the trust’s charitable object and governance structure;
  • amend the articles of association;
  • appoint or remove trustees;
  • appoint the trust’s auditors and receive the trust’s annual audited accounts; and, ultimately,
  • dissolve the academy trust if required.

Members will typically meet once per year with preparation time required. This translates to a commitment of around two hours per month.
