Could you be an Academy Ambassador in Merseyside? Lydiate Learning Trust seeks a new non-executive directors to join its board.
The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.
Established in January 2015, Lydiate Learning Trust is a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) with an ethos rooted in the belief that every child should be afforded the very best opportunities in life. The trust currently has two secondary academies, Deyes High School and Childwall Sports and Science Academy. It also has a Studio school (for ages 14-19) however, the Studio School will close in July 2020. The trust also has a large teacher training centre known as the AMP SCITT (Associated Merseyside Partnership, School Centred Initial Teacher Training).
The trust serves a diverse range of students from varying ethnic backgrounds and the proportion that speak English as an additional language ranges from 4% to 24%. The proportion of students that are deemed ‘disadvantaged’ varies from 14% to 48%. The trust serves 2,400 pupils across its three academies and has a budget of £17m. It is a strategic partner in the Holy Rosary Teaching School Alliance which spans both the Primary and Secondary sectors and includes 12 Primary Schools and three Secondary Schools.
The board seeks business leaders with expertise in

As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 – 24 months:
- Ensuring financially viability and sustainability of the MAT.
- Further developing a strategy for recruitment, retention and succession.
- Developing a clear strategic vision and establish an ethos/culture that people buy into.
Board governance in education is a strategic, ‘eyes on, hands off’ commitment. The trust board meets once per term (autumn, spring and summer). Meetings tend to start between 5.30pm and 7pm and last up to 2 hours. Overall trustees are likely to need to devote an average of 7-8 hours per month. There is a chance there may need to be extra meetings to oversee the closure of the Studio School but these are not expected to be excessive.
You will be responsible for:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
- Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent
As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our alumni network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role. All roles are pro bono.
