Member role

Could you help to improve education in Manchester by volunteering to become a member at a multi-academy trust?  Education and Leadership Trust seeks up to three new members.

Members provide independent oversight to the work of the board of trustees to ensure suitable accountability for decision making and strategy. As multi-academy trusts (MATs) grow and develop, they face significant challenges. This role enables professionals to use skills and experience gained throughout their career to help trusts across England and improve the life chances of young people. All roles are pro bono.

The trust

Education and Leadership Trust was formed in September 2014 and now comprises three secondary schools including post-16 provision. The schools serve some of the most deprived wards in Manchester and embrace and celebrate their cultural diversity. They receive their intake from over 75 primary schools from within and beyond Manchester.

The trust grew out of Whalley Range High School, located in the heart of inner-city Manchester. Whalley Range has had a strong reputation for some time and initially the trust was developed to support Levenshulme High when it ran into difficulties. Levenshulme High bounced back quickly and was judged Outstanding by Ofsted at its last inspection. Whalley Range and Levenshulme are both all-girls schools. The East Manchester Academy (TEMA), also part of the trust, serves a mixed intake (boys and girls) of 970 students in the heart of Manchester’s regeneration area in Beswick.

Collectively, the three academies in the Education and Leadership Trust provide for around 3,500 pupils. The trust employs over 500 staff and has a budget of almost £25m. The trust is dedicated to promoting the emotional, physical and social wellbeing of its diverse and multi-cultural population and aspires to be a centre of excellence for the education of young people.

Person specification

The board seeks three members with previous experience in

  • Corporate Governance, or
  • Non-executive/ Trustee roles


Applicants should have an extensive and demonstrable background in senior leadership roles, with strategic vision and knowledge of the non-executive director role. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan.

What’s involved?

Members have a similar role to the shareholders in a company limited by shares. They provide high-level oversight and scrutiny of the work of the trust board.

Most notably, members:

  • define the trust’s charitable object and governance structure;
  • amend the articles of association;
  • appoint or remove trustees;
  • appoint the trust’s auditors and receive the trust’s annual audited accounts; and, ultimately,
  • dissolve the academy trust if required.

The trust asks Members to meet for briefing sessions 2-3 times per year in addition to the AGM.  Meetings are likely to be 2 hours long.  This translates to a commitment of around 10 hours per year.
