Head of Governance
Full Time, Permanent
Driven by its Living Knowledge vision to make its outstanding collections accessible to everyone for research, inspiration and enjoyment, the British Library is one of the UK’s most dynamic cultural institutions, with a broad and diverse remit ranging from education and arts to science and business support. We have bases in London and Yorkshire, and partnerships with organisations across the UK and around the world.
We are seeking an exceptional individual, with proven experience in a Board or Company Secretary role or equivalent, to join us as our new Head of Governance, in succession to Richard Gibby who retires later this year. The successful candidate will work at the heart of the organisation, working with the Chair and Chief Officers to shape and manage the business agendas of the Board, the Strategic Leadership Team and other key committees.
The Head of Governance role acts as the Library’s senior point of expertise on all matters of corporate governance, ensuring that the highest standards and full records are maintained, and has overall responsibility for the organisation’s engagement with the executive arm of Government on matters of public accountability and appointments.
This is a rare opportunity for the right individual to contribute at the highest level to the continued successful development of a major institution, as it approaches its 50th anniversary in 2023. The Library is an equal opportunities employer and especially welcomes applications from candidates from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
More about the British Library
As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s intellectual memory for the future and make it available to all for research, inspiration and enjoyment. At present we have well over 170 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items added every year. We have manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints anddrawings, music scores, and patents. We make our collections and programmes available to all. We operate the world’s largest document delivery service providing millions of items a year to customers all over the world. What matters to us is that we preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future by anyone, anywhere.
In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits. Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes a minimum of 20.6% (this may be higher dependant on grade). Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.
