Non-executive director/ Trustee role
Could you be an Academy Ambassador in Wigan? The Rowan Learning Trust seeks a new non-executive director to join its board.
The Academy Ambassadors programme brings the expertise of the business world onto boards at multi-academy trusts (MATs) throughout the country to raise standards of education and improve the life chances of young people, which is critical to our social and economic success.
The trust currently comprises four academies which provide for children up to the age of 16, including an Alternative Provision Academy. It was established by the governing body and leadership team of Hawkley Hall High School, following successful school-to-school support over a number of years and across a large number of schools in the Greater Manchester area and further afield.
The trust has been approved (by the DfE) to take-on Prestwich Arts College in Bury, which was judged as inadequate in May last year. The trust team are already working with the staff and students and it is hoped the official transfer to the trust will be in spring this year.
Rowan Learning Trust was established with a core belief that when schools work together, they are able to accelerate school improvement and deliver better education and outcomes for all members of the community. It currently has around 2,600 students and an income of around £19m (the number of students and income will increase further at the point of Prestwich Arts College joining the trust).
The board seeks a senior business leader with expertise in
As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 – 24 months:
- Managing growth of the organization, including plans for the new special measures school.
- Improving student outcomes and maintaining these improvements in the current schools.
- Managing the trust and school finances. (It should be noted that in these times of financial constraint, the trust is operating with a suitable surplus to cushion any unexpected fluctuations in the future. Nevertheless, the trust will need to consider and operate prudently).
Board governance in education is a strategic, ‘eyes on, hands off’ commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year/6-8 hours’ time per month.
You will be responsible for:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
- Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent
As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our Ambassadors alumni network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role. All roles are pro bono.
