Could you help to improve education in Doncaster by volunteering to become a member at a multi-academy trust? Isle Education Trust seeks a new member to join the supervisory board.
Members provide independent oversight to the work of the board of trustees to ensure suitable accountability for decision making and strategy. As multi-academy trusts (MATs) grow and develop, they face significant challenges. This role enables professionals to use skills and experience gained throughout their career to help trusts across England and improve the life chances of young people.
Isle Ed Trust is a small multi academy trust based in North Lincolnshire, comprising three academies.
In Spring 2013, South Axholme Academy was approached by the Department for Education to become a sponsor of Epworth Primary Academy, which had gone in to special measures that year. This local solution to support the neighbouring primary school was agreed and support was placed in the primary school to accelerate their journey out of special measures. Epworth Primary Academy came out of special measures and was graded good in December 2014, 14 months after being sponsored.
In October 2014, what was the Young People's Education Centre (YPEC) joined the trust. The former YPEC now operates as Coritani Academy; an Alternative Provision (AP) school for students who need a more bespoke learning experience than is offered in mainstream schools. Its results are now outstanding compared to similar providers, nationally. Isle Education Trust currently has in excess of 1100 students and 160 staff and it is looking to grow.
The board seek a business leader with previous experience in
- Corporate Governance, or
- Non-executive/ Trustee roles
Applicants should have an extensive and demonstrable background in senior leadership roles, with strategic vision and knowledge of the non-executive director role. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan.
Members have a similar role to the shareholders in a company limited by shares. They provide high-level oversight and scrutiny of the work of the trust board.
Most notably, members:
- define the trust’s charitable object and governance structure;
- amend the articles of association;
- appoint or remove trustees;
- appoint the trust’s auditors and receive the trust’s annual audited accounts; and, ultimately,
- dissolve the academy trust if required.
The members meet twice per year: once for the Annual General Meeting and at one other point in the year to gain an understanding of the operation of the trust. This translates to a commitment of around two hours per month.
