About the trust

A multi-academy trust (MAT) comprising seven schools, Manor Hall Academy Trust (MHAT) serves over 600 pupils and has c.360 staff. Its annual budget is currently approximately £13.5mn. It is located in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.

A special school trust containing one PRU (Pupil Referral Unit), MHAT has children with a diverse spectrum of SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) and residential provision for those with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs.

Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust. The core functions of their role are: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding executive leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of a charitable company funded by the public purse.

The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust in compliance with its charitable objects, company and charity law.

In the interests of safeguarding and in accordance with DfE requirements, all trustee appointments will be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.

Person specification

Every trustee is expected to abide by the trust’s code of conduct and the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Possessing skills in leading organisational change, embedding systems and working strategically to devise and develop strategy, the ideal candidate will have a proven track record of working at strategic level in a medium or large organisation. Prior experience of a non-executive position is advantageous, as well as evidence of leading on a restructure of a complex, multi-site operation. Industry qualifications are highly desirable.

The trust would be interested in speaking to an individual with a high level of expertise in corporate governance, potentially as part of a CEO/ General Management position. The trust seeks independent challenge and a viewpoint from outside the education sector.

Time commitment

Three hours /month minimum.

Location of board meetings and trust website

Board meetings are held at Loxley Hall School, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, ST14 8RS. The trust has offices in Stoke and Wetley Rocks so there is potential for some board meetings to be held on these sites.
