About the trust
Bay Education Trust comprises two primary schools and one secondary, offering provision for students up to the age of 16. In the surrounding area there are also three local selective schools and this influences the trust cohort.
Approximately 40% of student at both the secondary school and one primary receive free school meals and a further 60% of the students in the second primary are in receipt of these. In addition to this, a large number of pupils at the trust have special education needs and this influences the trusts strategy and approach.
The trust currently has two ‘Good’ ratings from Ofsted and one ‘Requires Improvement’ rating. All schools are expected to be rated ‘Good’ during the 2019/20 academic year. 400 members of staff work across the trust, which operates under a budget of approximately £13m.
Plans for the future
Three key challenges for your trust over the next 12-24 months are:
- Financial stability - the trust is subject to a Financial Notice to Improve (FNTI) and the trust needs to work towards repaying funds whilst also improving standards.
- Improving facilities - the trust has recently been successful with several CIF bids and is now beginning to improve the building conditions, however, there is still much to be done to make the buildings fully fit for purpose.
- Pupil standards – the trust is experiencing poor literacy standards at the secondary school and wishes to focus resource on improving these during a financially challenging period.
The next two years will concentrate on removing the FNTI, improving the premises and raising pupil standards. Once these challenges have been met the trust will then explore options of expansion or merger.

Role 1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director or Member
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust. The core functions of their role are: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding executive leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of a charitable company funded by the public purse.
The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust in compliance with its charitable objects, company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.
In the interests of safeguarding, all trustee appointments would be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.
Every trustee is expected to abide by the trust’s code of conduct and the seven principles of public life set out by Lord Nolan: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

The strategic expertise required for this role includes:

The appointee will have senior leadership experience managing change, ideally within a multi-site organisation. The trust seeks candidates that are willing to be involved in a challenging area and engage fully with the strategy that has been developed by the current board to improve the education and therefore the life chances of the pupils. The ideal candidate will possess some SEN knowledge or be prepared to upskill themselves.
6 hours per month minimum.

Background on academy trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 69% of secondary schools and 33% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 900 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
