Message from the President

Welcome to the latest edition of Agenda

A new way of working

After a good start to the year, everything stopped in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  We have had to adapt very quickly to new ways of working. Much has changed and while boards are now thankfully starting to work towards recovery, there is still uncertainty ahead.  For our part, the Institute in Ireland is adapting the way it provides services for members.  You will have noted the increase in webinars recently and this will continue for the months ahead and into 2021.  We are also looking at providing some of our training courses virtually to ensure that the development needs of our members continue to be met.

Annual Conference

Unfortunately, our annual conference which was due to take place in May was cancelled. We have rescheduled it to May 2021.

We held four very well attended webinars up to the summer.  In April we teamed up with Chartered Accountants Ireland to run a webinar: ‘How Boards manage in times of uncertainty’.  This was followed by a CPD webinar hosted by LK Shields in May: ‘The role of directors in distributions, loans and capital’.

In July we jointly held a webinar with The Housing Agency and CLS Chartered Secretaries on Owners’ Management Companies: corporate governance for company secretaries & stakeholders.  Finally, we had great interest in our summer update webinar where the Registrar of Companies, Ms Maureen O’Sullivan and Dr David McFadden gave an update to members on the latest developments at the CRO, which was hosted by McCann Fitzgerald.

Our first event of autumn is the Webinar hosted by Simmons & Simmons on ‘Key considerations for the Irish Funds industry- 2020 and beyond’.

Our colleagues at the Institute in London are also holding a number of very interesting and relevant webinars for members and details of all upcoming events are on the front page of our website.

Training programmes

During the year we had to change our approach to our training and development programmes. They are now running on a virtual basis. While a number of our minute taking and Introduction to the role of the company secretary courses are booked out there are still spaces available on the December courses. See links below:

  • Introduction to the role of the Company Secretary, Tuesday 1 December - Book here
  • Minute Taking course, Thursday 3 December - Book here

Annual renewal of memberships

Members should by now have received and paid their notice of membership renewal. For members where payments are still outstanding we would encourage members to pay these as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. The easiest way to renew and pay is online through your MyCG account. We recognise that some members may be experiencing hardship in these uncertain times and I would draw your attention to the Chartered Secretaries Charitable Trust for further guidance.  For all membership related queries please contact the membership team at
