A mystery solved

24 November 2015 by Conor Ryan

What does a chartered secretary do? A dentist ‘does’ teeth. A doctor ‘does’ medicine. An architect ‘does’ houses. But what does a chartered secretary do? If only I had a cent for every time I have been asked that question, I would be very well off by now! And what answer do I normally give? I say ‘it’s complicated’.

Never out of breadth

It’s not that we at the ICSA don’t know who we are, but to explain to someone the depth and breadth of the role of the chartered secretary, well this can take time! From governance to AGM’s, from board meetings to the chairperson’s confidante, from compliance to legals, we really do cover a lot of bases.

Your country needs CS’s

And so to take some of the mystery out of our profession, and to attract as many as we can into our ranks, we are running a “Career as a Company Secretary” Information Meeting at 6.30pm on Thursday 26th November at BDO’s offices at Beaux Lane House on Mercer St. in Dublin 2.

Really, we are nice

Being a chartered secretary is an enjoyable and rewarding career. We would say that, wouldn’t we? Well, only because it’s true. Of all of the professions that I work with (and through my work I have probably dealt with the vast bulk of them), I would claim that chartered secretaries are the most sociable, likeable and collegiate. We actually help each other, even those of us in rival firms! It’s part of the chartered secretary DNA.

Join us

If you like what you hear so far why not come along and see us on Thursday? Or maybe you know someone who is looking for a long term professional career with prospects, maybe a son or daughter, so why not tell them about it? You can register here to secure a place or if you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact us at icsastudentgroup@gmail.com. As I say, we are sociable and will be serving refreshments upon arrival, so join us for what might turn out to be the first steps on a long career path as a chartered secretary.
