More and more organisations are recognising their data as a critical business asset .Yet are the risks, both economic and reputational, of not adequately governing data being properly considered in the boardroom? For boards, the use of data is a powerful way of building interest and support for new business ideas and ways of working. How can governance professionals benefit from embracing data?

This panel session looks at real-life examples of how to use data to generate persuasive business presentations. We will look into the benefits of data-driven decision making and how to generate economic value from corporate data. Finally, we will talk about how boards can make the cultural shift and drive the new digital language through all levels of the organisation.

Panel discussion - User rights and decision-making in the boardroom

As organisations come fully to understand the economic value of the data they hold, so can we expect to see them explore ways of maximising the economic benefit. But how does that work in a post-GDPR world, when users have the right to be compensated by companies who are generating profit as a direct result of their data? We discuss what rights data subjects have with the monetisation of their personal data and what you need to be aware of as a governance professional.

Workshop: Data ethics & bias in the boardroom

As boards become increasingly familiar with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and what it can do for their business data, so too do they need to develop a better understanding of where that data comes from, and the very human biases that can be “hardwired” in. In this interactive session, we explore how boards can ensure the data they receive is free from bias, how they can be certain on the ethical value of the information they rely on – and the impact it is having on decision-making.

Miranda Craig FCG, Senior Manager, Governance Advisory Services at Computershare

Miranda has just joined Computershare’s new Governance Services team as Senior Manager, having spent the previous year leading the team which delivered the Independent Review into the Quality and Effectiveness of Audit for Sir Donald Brydon.  Prior to this, Miranda was Deputy Company Secretary at Sage and was responsible for the secretariat team with a focus on bringing good practice in governance to the Sage Board, its committees and c.126 subsidiaries worldwide. Miranda has also held senior secretariat roles at ARM Holdings, R&Q and EDF Energy, having qualified as a chartered secretary with Ernst & Young. She has a particular interest in change management and bringing greater efficiency to secretariat processes through technology.

Susan Hooper, Non-Executive Director, Uber

Susan sits on the Boards of Uber UK, the Department for Exiting the European Union (DExEU), The Rank Group plc, Affinity Water Ltd. and Wizz Air plc. She is also actively involved in several startups in the medical, property and climate change areas.

Prior to this, Susan was Managing Director of British Gas Residential Services, a £1.8bn revenue division, leading the Service and Repair, Central Heating Installations, Electrical Services, and Dyno-Rod business units.

Susan joined British Gas from the Acromas Group where she was Chief Executive of the Travel Division, responsible for Saga Holidays, Hotels, Cruises, the AA Travel division and Titan Travel. Previously, she held senior roles at Royal Caribbean International, Avis Europe, PepsiCo International, McKinsey & Co, and Saatchi & Saatchi living in over 7 countries worldwide.

She was chair of LuxuryBARED and has held several non-executive directorships, including Courtaulds, Royal & Sun Alliance, Transcom, First Choice, S.C Johnson, Whitbread. Susan was also a member of the advisory Board of the LUISS Business School in Rome.

Susan has a BA from the Johns Hopkins University and an MA from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (S.A.I.S.) in Washington DC. She is fluent in German and Italian.

Gavin Littlejohn, Chairman, FDATA Global

Gavin Littlejohn serves as Chairman of the Financial Data and Technology Association, the Global Open Banking Trade Association, where he successfully led the campaign to have account aggregation added to PSD2 in 2013. Through FDATA he is a leader of the Open Banking Movement and campaigns for common technical standards and a consistent liability models across the Globe.

Gavin was appointed as Convenor of the Fintech Stakeholder Group of the UK Open Banking Implementation Entity in 2016 and is now working with a number of other markets engaged on the same mission.

Gavin is a fintech entrepreneur with experience of developing innovative solutions to mass market problems and is well-renowned as the Founder of Money Dashboard, and acted as its CEO until 2015.

Professor Philip Treleaven, Director of the UK Centre for Financial Computing and Professor of Computing, UCL

Philip Treleaven is Director of the UK Centre for Financial Computing and Professor of Computing at UCL. Twenty years ago his research group developed much of the early fraud detection technology and built the first insider dealing detection system for the London Stock Exchange. For the past 15 years Prof. Treleaven’s research group has developed algorithmic trading systems with many of the leading investment banks and funds, and for the past five years they have worked on Regulation, Systemic Risk and RegTech with the Bank of England and FCA. Current research includes the application of machine learning and blockchain technology to financial compliance and regulation.

Rob Shapland, Head of Awareness, Falanx

Rob Shapland is an ethical hacker with 12 years’ experience attacking the defences of hundreds of organisations, from small businesses to major international organisations.

His specialism is ‘red teaming’, or full simulation of criminal attacks, combining his hacking knowledge with his other hobby of dressing up and breaking into buildings. He uses stories of these intrusions to deliver engaging and exciting cyber security training courses to companies all over the world.

He is also a regular speaker at events and conferences around Europe, and appears on both BBC and ITV as a cyber security adviser.

Adam Smith-Anthony, Of Counsel, Omnia Strategy

Adam Smith-Anthony is Of Counsel at Omnia Strategy and the Head of the Business & Human Rights practice. He is a qualified solicitor-advocate specialising in public international and human rights law. His broad experience also encompasses employment, intellectual property, consumer and commercial law.

Adam advises and represents businesses on matters of corporate responsibility and business & human rights, providing legal, communications and commercial support. In recent months this has included leading global human rights reviews for blue-chip companies and representing clients in parent company liability litigation in the UK Supreme Court.

Adam has also advised State entities in respect of public international law matters including: international criminal law and international humanitarian law, international and regional courts and accountability mechanisms, the UN OHCHR universal periodic review process and human rights treaty bodies, and the rule of law and capacity building. He has also acted as lead negotiator and counsel on a strategic infrastructure deal for an Eastern European State and has experience advising on matters of international investment law and the enforcement of arbitral awards and court judgments.

Before joining Omnia Strategy, Adam worked for a leading international law firm in London, including extended secondments to the in-house legal teams of two renowned international technology and online services companies. He led the legal team representing the UNHCR in a strategic judicial intervention regarding refugee returns from the UK to Somalia.

Separately, Adam completed a placement within the UK Houses of Parliament, and served as an Associate Legal Officer in the Chambers Support Section and an advisor to the President of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Adam is admitted to the roll in England and Wales where his higher rights of audience permit him to appear before the senior courts. He was appointed the firm’s Compliance Officer for Legal Practice in June 2018. Adam holds LL.B. Law (honours) and LL.M. Public International Law (distinction) degrees from the University of Nottingham, a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from the University of Oxford, and has completed further training at the University College London and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law.

Steve Wright is an authority on data privacy and cyber security, having worked in the industry for over 25 years. In that time, he has held the principal information, privacy and data security roles for companies such as John Lewis Partnerships, Unilever, Deloitte, PwC, Siemens and Capita. Most recently, he held the interim position of DPO at the Bank of England, where he remains as Advisor to the DPO and CISO.

A technology enthusiast, he remains fascinated by the incredible things that can be done with data. Yet he understands only too well the risks to reputation and privacy in a world where social media, cyber security, legislation, fraud and regulatory complexities are rife.

Today, Steve advises senior leadership in all things related to the safeguarding of personal data, protecting brand image and–above all–building consumer trust.
