The ICSA Guernsey Conference 2016

About

The 2016 ICSA Guernsey Conference took place on 27th April at the St Pierre Park Hotel. Thank you to all our guests, speakers and sponsors for being a part of this interesting event.

Organisations in Guernsey are already committed to meeting the highest international standards of transparency and governance. However, as the environment within which businesses operate becomes ever more complex, their governance arrangements are increasingly being put to the test.

In this half-day conference we considered a number of contemporary governance challenges, among them were board-level responsibilities for such areas as the development of strategy, succession planning and the embedding of socially responsible practice. We also looked at some of the latest tactics used by cyber criminals and explored how managing intellectual property is an aspect of good governance.

09.45 Governance and the regulatory challenge
Governance is a crucial matter for all firms, not least regulated financial services firms. In this session, we answer the question, 'What is the Commission’s approach to reviewing governance?' We also reflect upon those governance themes the Commission has identified as arising from its reviews.
Emma Bailey, Director, Investment Supervision and Policy Division, Guernsey Financial Services Commission
10.15 Our people are our best assets
Understanding the challenges and opportunities the business faces, and the skills and expertise needed at board level not just now but in the future, are crucial tasks for any board. We consider the links between longevity, succession planning and long-term business success.

10.45 Tea/coffee
11.15 Cyber crime: taking stock
The threat from cyber crime continues to dominate press headlines. In this session, we look at the state of the cyber crime ‘market’ in 2016 and ask, where are the biggest threats coming from? We reflect upon the darker side of social networking and examine how even familiar threats such as rogue e-mail attachments are still potent.
Matthew Parker, Head of Information Security, Mourant Ozannes
11.45 IP rights as an aspect of governance
Has your business ever undertaken an audit of your intellectual property? Do you understand your IP - and are you aware of the risks to those rights? We look at what opportunities there may be for you from Guernsey developing its International IP capability.
Alan Bougourd, Registrar, Guernsey Registry
12.15 Leading the way on CSR
If corporate social responsibility concerns are to become firmly embedded within an organisation, the lead on addressing those concerns needs to come from the top – not least from the board itself. In this session, we consider what effective leadership on CSR really looks like and ask, are boards up to the job?
Susie Crowder, Non-Executive Director, UBS and C5
12.45 Closing address: ICSA 125
125 years on from when the Institute was first formed, we look at how ICSA continues to lead the way on promoting and developing best practice in governance. We take this opportunity to look at how ICSA is developing next generation of GRC professionals to be fit for the future.
