Before moving to the UK and qualifying as a solicitor in 1997, Stephen practiced as an attorney in partnership at a regional Cape Town-based law firm.
He joined SABMiller in 2002 from a leading City law firm, where he specialised in international corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance advisory work. Stephen was appointed Group Company Secretary in November 2014 and in that capacity he supports the Chairman and the Board and advises the Chairman, the Board and senior management on legal, regulatory, governance, compliance and key policy matters.
As Deputy General Counsel he is responsible for leading the group's global legal function, managing legal risk and material litigation. He serves on a number of operating and holding company boards, as well as on the Council of the International Chamber of Commerce (UK). He has served on working groups of the GC100, providing business input into key areas of legislative and policy reform.
