Ask senior leaders to name one issue that’s occupied a lot of their time recently, and they’ll say environmental, social and governance, or ESG. Public opinion on the issue has been moving quickly, and organisations have had to be nimble to keep up.
This award recognises those initiatives which are designed to address ESG issues head on – not just in the governance sphere itself but around the organisation, and in its interactions with customers, investors and other stakeholders. The closer alignment of ESG concerns with organisational strategy would be relevant here, as would the use of ESG data to inform decision-making or reporting that demonstrates the board’s commitment to sustainability. So, too, would efforts to address problems with supply chains, human trafficking and exploitation, or to minimise the organisation’s carbon footprint.
Whatever the nature of the initiative, the judges are looking not just for a positive story but for evidence that engagement with ESG issues is an ongoing commitment that sits at the heart of the organisation’s work. Nominees can be individuals or teams in any sector.
