Claire is a solicitor and chartered company secretary with over 30 years’ experience in legal, compliance and company secretarial roles, principally in Banking and Financial Services.
She has recently completed a four year term as a non-executive member of the Audit & Risk Committee at BEIS, the Government Department. She is also a member of the Stakeholder Panel of the Financial Reporting Council.
Claire started her career with a City law firm before moving in-house to take up various Legal and Compliance roles. She was Compliance Policy Director at Legal & General before moving to Ernst & Young LLP in 2001 where she was a Director in the FS Risk & Regulatory Practice. In 2005, Claire returned to Legal & General as Group Company Secretary, later taking up the same role at Lloyds Banking Group during the banking crisis (2009 – 2014). In 2014, she moved to the troubled Co-operative Group where, as Group Secretary, she led the constitutional and governance reforms in response to the Myners’ Review. In 2016, Claire returned to financial services to take up the role of Group Company Secretary at Barclays plc.
In 2018, Claire opted to move into advisory work. Through her consultancy, CoSecutive Ltd, Claire works with Boards and Company Secretaries to improve board effectiveness, principally helping shape governance frameworks or working with boards through challenging periods. Recent projects include working with two major banks on the implementation of governance frameworks for their ring-fenced banks.
