Upcoming events

Developing your career as a governance professional

Date: Wednesday 4 December 2019
Venue: DLA Piper, Princes Exchange, Princes Square, Leeds, LS1 4BY
Time: Registration 5.30pm; event 6.00pm to 7.00pm
Cost: Free

A panel of local members at different points of their careers as governance professionals will be sharing an insight into their career paths, along with their hints and their tips for progressing, and they will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

There will also be a brief introduction to the Institute's Competency Framework which is a handy tool to help you manage your own development.

If you are just starting out on a governance career or looking for that next big promotion, this event will be of interest to you. Even if you are content where you are in your career, come along and share your story with others during the networking sessions. 

There will be an opportunity to chat to like-minded people to make those all important supportive connections from 5.30pm, before the formal business starts at 6.00pm, and we will be going to a local pub afterwards.   

The panel will be facilitated by the Chair of the Yorkshire Branch, Lesley Ward who is pulling together panel members from different sectors and seniority to ensure an interesting session.  If you would be willing to be a panel member please get in touch.

Previous events

Legal Horizon Scanning, Leeds 

Date: Thursday 10 October

DLA Piper scanned the 2020 legal horizon to provide a series of pointers that are relevant to governance professionals from all types of organisations.

Senior lawyers from DLA Piper provided an overview of the significant changes coming into effect in respect of corporate governance and reporting obligations in the next 12 months.

This included changes reported upon for the first time in 2020. The speakers also provided a snapshot of other key upcoming legal and/or reporting changes which are relevant to Company Secretaries and governance professionals, for example in company law, employment/HR, environment, health and safety, data privacy and finance.

Attendees of this event received an insight into what is coming up to enable them to take the necessary action to ensure their organisation is compliant. Students found it helpful to be aware of the latest changes for exams answers and took away an appreciation of the interesting variety a career in governance can provide.

There was an opportunity to network from 5.30pm before the formal business started at 6.00pm, and attendees went to a local pub afterwards.

 

Yorkshire Branch Coffee Morning, Sheffield 

Date: Wednesday 11 September

Members and non-members were invited to join us in a relaxing environment to informally meet and chat with others within the local network. You came along for a tea or coffee and to share stories, skills, knowledge and expertise. 

Yorkshire Branch Chair Lesley Ward FCG was there to answer any questions about the Institute and branch activities, and she was also interested to hear your thoughts about what you would like from your branch.

 

Summer CPD evening

The East Midlands Branch, in association with the Yorkshire Branch and the West Midlands Branch, invited you to our recent CPD event discussing Next Generation Governance at Rolls Royce in Derby.

Summer Yorkshire branch Event

Date: Monday 24 June 2019 

The Yorkshire Branch held its Summer Networking CPD event on Monday 24 June and we were delighted to welcome a number of new faces.

Our speaker was David Venus (Immediate Past President of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and author of the report 'Futureproofing: Technological innovation, the company secretary and implications for corporate governance')

He gave a fascinating and thought provoking presentation in which he introduced AI and Blockchain technologies. These are already changing the world of work for governance professionals in some organisations, and will impact us all within a few years. Finally, he suggested questions that we should be asking ourselves as governance professionals to prepare. An interesting discussion followed about the implications of what David had introduced.

 

Yorkshire branch Informal Coffee Meeting

Date: Tuesday 14 May 2019

After the success of our informal coffee meeting in February, we planned to hold another one in Sheffield. This was an opportunity to meet and network with fellow governance professionals in the local area in an informal, friendly environment.

 

Yorkshire branch Spring Meeting: Next Generation Governance

Date: Thursday 14 March 2019

Big forces are reshaping what it means to be a governance professional in the 21st century - from technological change, to environmental concerns, to new attitudes to the role of organisations in society.

This session was led by Peter Swabey FCG, Policy and Research Director, The Chartered Governance Institute and explored the Institute's latest research findings on millennial perspectives on governance. 

 

Yorkshire branch informal coffee in Sheffield

Date: Tuesday 26 February 2019 

The Yorkshire branch invited you to our first networking coffee group in Sheffield.

You were invited to join us in a relaxing environment to informally meet and chat with others within the local network. Attendees came along for a tea or coffee and to share stories, skills, knowledge and expertise.

Yorkshire Branch Chair Lesley Ward FCG was there to answer any questions about the Institute and branch activities, and was interested to hear your thoughts about what you would like from your branch. Guests and non-members were also very welcome.

 

Winter CPD event

Date: Wednesday 5 December 2018 

Horizon scanning 

Victoria Rhodes and Faith James of DLA Piper scanned the 2019 horizon to provide a series of pointers that were relevant to company secretaries from all types of organisations:

Victoria covered the impact of the significant changes coming into effect in respect of corporate governance and reporting obligations effective for financial years starting on or after 31 January 2019.

Following high-profile corporate insolvencies in the last couple of years, the Government has proposed strengthening the corporate governance of firms that are in, or approaching, insolvency. Faith highlighted how these proposals might impact on complex group structure, shareholder responsibilities, payment of dividends and directors' duties. The session also considered protection for supply chains in the event of insolvency.

Our speakers also provided a snapshot of other key upcoming legal and/or reporting changes in subjects such as HR; payroll; equality and diversity; gender/CEO/ethnic pay reporting; environment, and health & safety.

 

Student revision seminar

Date: Thursday 25 October 2018

The agenda for this student revision seminar included exam techniques by Theresa Minnie, The Chartered Governance Institute Head of Outreach, and a choice between two sessions led by examiners of the relevant papers:

  • A revision toolbox session on Corporate Governance, revising concepts, use of mind maps, exam techniques and analysing previous exam papers.
  • Financial Reporting and Analysis: the session (i) reviewed the best approach to the compulsory analysis and interpretation question (ii) worked through a recent consolidation question and (iii) reviewed past papers and exam techniques for finance papers.

Attendees also had the opportunity to network informally with other students.

 

Inclusion & Diversity and the role of the Board

Date: Tuesday 6 November 2018 

There has been an increased focus on diversity issues for all companies, whether that is in respect of board composition, or gender pay reporting. This joint session with AWCS, hosted by KPMG Leeds, looked at developments in this area, and also took a further look at inclusion issues, such as why disability should be on the board agenda. Finally, the session looked to debate what the profession can do to move disability further up the governance agenda.

 

 Yorkshire branch Autumn CPD Meeting

Date: Thursday 18 October 2018

We welcomed Lee Parkin, Senior Security Consultant at CGI as our speaker for the evening. In light of a series of data leaks from high profile brands, virus attacks on the NHS, the advent of GDPR and the growing threat of hacktivists and cyber terrorists, Lee will provide an update on the latest cyber risks and opportunities for organisations so you can make sure your board are doing the right things.

We also welcomed Claire Wedderman, Regional Manager at Inspiring Governance, who explained volunteer governance opportunities in schools and colleges available to you and your organisation.

 

Special meeting on proposed Charter and byelaw changes

Date: Thursday 26 July 2018

John Heaton, The Chartered Governance Institute UKRIAT President, and Charis Evans, Business Development Director, updated you on the introduction of the new qualifying programme syllabus, affiliated membership and the new designation of chartered governance professional. They also sought your views on the International Council proposals to build on these innovations, including a new name for The Chartered Governance Institute. Yorkshire Summer CPD meeting

Dr Nick Beech, Director of Executive Learning at Leeds Beckett University. Nick discussed the role of the Company Secretary in mediating and shaping an organisational governance culture.

 

Yorkshire Spring CPD meeting

Date: Thursday 15 March 2018

Our two speakers for the meeting; David Charity, Financial Investigation Manager, Economic Crime Unit, and Jai Baker, Head of Industry, Link Market Services and Chair of the Insitute's Registrars Group.

David is a manager at West Yorkshire Police’s Economic Crime Unit, the largest ECU outside of London. The Unit specialises in investigating Serious Fraud & Corruption, and disrupting Organised Crime through Money Laundering and Asset recovery investigations. David’s expertise is in Money Laundering & Asset Recovery and he gave us an insight into how organised crime groups launder money and what businesses can do to protect themselves against this.

We are delighted that Jai has agreed to provide an overview of what is happening in the share registration and employee share plans industries. He discussed what is coming in relation to regulatory change and how the Registrars Group are managing these challenges. Jai provided an update on Link Asset Services following its acquisition of Capita Registrars Limited and how they too are helping its issuer clients and other stakeholders overcome some of the regulatory hurdles and future planning needs to meet shareholder and investor expectations.

 

Yorkshire November CPD Meeting

Members and students of The Chartered Governance Institute and other interested parties were invited to the November CPD meeting of the Yorkshire branch.

Peter Swabey FCG, The Chartered Governance Institute Policy and Research Director presented an update on the latest governance developments. 

This was followed by a networking event - an opportunity for you to meet more of your fellow company secretaries in Yorkshire.   

 

Yorkshire Autumn CPD Meeting

Date: Thursday 14 September 2017

There was two topics on the agenda for the evening, which were led by Peter Swabey FCG, The Chartered Governance Institute Policy and Research Director, who was joined by Frank Curtiss FCG, Past President of the UK, Republic of Ireland and Associated Territories division. 

The meeting opened with Peter taking you through the key findings and recommendations from the recent The Chartered Governance Institute/Henley Business School report, 'Conflict and Tension in the Boardroom'. The report contains a set of core principles to guide boardroom behaviours, and insights that can be used to make boardrooms places of collaboration, as well as of challenge and independence.

In the second part of the evening, Peter gave a short briefing on the proposed Charter and byelaw changes that will be put to a vote by the worldwide membership at the AGM on 4 October 2017. 

Peter outlined the strategic drivers for the proposed changes, and what they would mean for you.

 

Yorkshire Branch Meeting

Ben Hagyard, Associate (Technology, Sourcing and Data Privacy) at DLA Piper UK LLP spoke about the General Data Protection Regulation.

Simon Osborne, The Chartered Governance Institute Chief Executive, presented on the future of governance and provide an update on constitutional proposals. 

 

Directors Duties and Corporate Governance 

Date: Thursday 9 March 2017

Speakers that attended the event: 

Simon Osborne FCG, The Chartered Governance Institute Chief Executive, provided an update from the Institute together with the recent amendments to the byelaws.

David Gracie FCG, KPMG and Chair of the Essex branch, focused our attention on directors duties and the value of corporate governance.

The Yorkshire Group first meeting
