‘Reporting that caters to a broader range of stakeholders will benefit the charity sector’, says The Chartered Governance Institute

London, 8 July 2020 – The Chartered Governance Institute has today welcomed its appointment as a SORP Engagement Partner Convenor of the SORP Committee, believing that efforts to help improve reporting will benefit the charity sector.

Commenting on the appointment, Sara Drake, chief executive of The Chartered Governance Institute says:

“We are delighted to have been appointed a convenor of the SORP Committee’s Trustee Engagement Strand as this new process provides a platform to hear more diverse voices, reflect wider priorities and desires and hopefully inform a better SORP in the future. We firmly believe that annual reports and accounts are of interest to a broad range of stakeholders and this is a chance to inform and shape the next SORP. While the financials are paramount, the prospect for annual reports to be more useful and informative on a broader range of issues of interest to different stakeholder groups is an opportunity to be embraced.

“The interest in charity reporting is not going to disappear, especially when there are growing calls for charities to better demonstrate their impact. Given our members’ roles in advising and supporting boards, we are well placed to help support the SORP Committee’s work on how trustees currently engage with the annual reporting process and how that could be improved. As an Institute that operates across numerous sectors in addition to the charity sector, we have a wealth of experience in reporting, running annual corporate reporting awards and producing how-to guides such as ‘Trust me, I’m listed: Why the annual report matters, and how to do it well’. This expertise gives us a unique insight into the benefits of reporting to a broader range of stakeholder groups that we can share with the SORP Committee.”
