London, 11 July 2018 – ICSA: The Governance Institute and Board Intelligence have today launched a number of key resources to help organisations ensure that boards have the information they need to govern successfully: an assessment tool to review the effectiveness and value of their board reporting; and guidance on ‘Effective Board Reporting’, which offers practical steps to bring about improvements.
Launching the resources at ICSA’s annual conference at ExCel London earlier today, Jennifer Sundberg, Co-CEO of Board Intelligence said:
“Research published by ICSA and Board Intelligence late last year revealed that board packs are too long and unfocused to aid effective board decision making. The resources that we have developed will help organisations to tackle this problem. The self-assessment tool is the natural cousin of the board reporting calculator that we launched in May this year, which allows users to uncover the hidden cost of board reporting to understand just how much time and money their organisation is spending on board reports. Now, armed with that information, they can use the new board reporting assessment tool to work out if they are getting bang for their buck.”
The assessment tool allows organisations to assess their board reporting in the following three areas:
Also speaking at the launch, Peter Swabey, Policy and Research Director at ICSA added:
“Both the calculator and self-assessment tool provide organisations with a mandate for change, but the guidance provides practical steps to bring about that change. It deals with the four main stages in the development of a board pack: identifying the information the board needs; commissioning board papers; writing board papers; and collating and distributing the board pack. Each section sets out the purpose and desired outcomes of that stage of the process, identifies who needs to be involved and then discusses some of the factors and questions that organisations should consider to achieve those outcomes. We believe that the guidance will assist organisations to produce a high-quality board pack which can focus board members’ attention where it is needed most.”
