Charity Commission inquiry into Oxfam shows that the three Ps of good governance remain essential

London, 12 June 2019 – ICSA: The Governance Institute has today issued a statement in response to the Charity Commission’s inquiry into Oxfam.

Commenting on the inquiry, which was published on 11 June, Louise Thomson, Head of Policy (Not for Profit) at ICSA: The Governance Institute said:

“The Charity Commission’s inquiry into OXFAM GB reminds the sector that good governance is essential not just to individual charities, but the wider sector and those that work, volunteer for, or use the services provided. The inquiry report highlights the importance of the three Ps of good governance: being clear about the charity’s purpose and delivering public benefit legally and ethically; ensuring policies and procedures are adhered to consistently across the charity and continue to be effective in meeting the needs of staff, volunteers and services users and evidencing that protocols are followed assiduously; and supporting people in living the values of the charity to create the organisational culture desired by providing ongoing training and development and learning from mistakes. Good governance is not a destination in itself, but a programme of continuous improvement that evolves to meet the various demands placed upon an organisation both internally and externally.”
