Members of The Chartered Governance Institute are highly qualified company secretaries and governance professionals with the knowledge, skills and experience to lead good governance. Members uphold our Code of Professional Standards and Ethics, undertake annual CPD and have the right to use designatory letters after their names to denote their grade of membership:
Our Chartered members – Fellows and Associates – represent the highest levels of achievement in the governance profession. They are qualified to postgraduate level in governance, compliance, strategy, finance, law, regulation, risk, and boardroom dynamics. Associates and have a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience. Fellows have a minimum of eight, three of these in a senior role. Fellows and Associates of over five years' standing may use the designation of Chartered Secretary or Chartered Governance Professional, according to their individual preference and context. Those who have not yet achieved five years as an Associate member, use the designation Chartered Secretary.
Our Affiliated members are qualified in governance on shorter sector specific qualifications at undergraduate level. These demonstrate specialist knowledge in Academy, Charity, Corporate, Health and Sports governance and in International Financial Administration. Affiliated membership is also available to students on the core qualifying programme who have passed the first half (Part One) of the qualification.
Graduates of the Institute have passed all the modules in our qualifying programme or passed a dual awarded postgraduate degree in Corporate Governance with one of our university partners. Graduates are typically developing the work experience required to become a Chartered member.
