CPD on a budget
Whilst many training courses can be expensive, CPD in general doesn’t have to be. The Institute only requires a minimum of 5 hours of formal CPD.
If you find a course or event that you wish to attend, we would encourage you to fully check that the course/event is relevant to you and that other courses/events of a similar kind are in the same price range, to make sure it is value for money. Alternatively, there are a number of other ways of satisfying the formal CPD requirement other than by attending commercial courses or events.
Some examples of low-cost formal CPD are:
- The nature of most Chartered Secretaries jobs means that there is a considerable amount of work-based CPD. You should record any work-based activities, such as meetings, presentations, briefing sessions etc where there is a learning element involved.
- You should record any internally organised work-based courses or events that you undertake.
- If you are undertaking any relevant training events for other professional bodies, these can also be recorded for your ICSA CPD.
- Attendance at any meetings, seminars, workshops, briefings or conferences organised by a local ICSA Member group
- Taking part in ICSA specialist panel or group events. Further details in connection with these panels/groups can be found on the Policy and Guidance section of the ICSA website.
- Consider any possibilities you have for sharing your professional knowledge, such as writing relevant books, articles and papers or lecturing and addressing meetings.
- We are often looking for Members to attend meetings at collaborative course universities or at Registered Tuition Providers, to brief students on possible Chartered Secretary job roles. If you might be interested in undertaking such activity please let us know.
- We are often looking for examiners, reviewers and advisors in connection with the qualifying programme. If you might be interested in undertaking such activity please let us know.
- ICSA visits universities across the UK to promote the profession and qualification to students. You can help us out at our stand, talking to students about your career or you could give a presentation to students at one of these events.
The remaining 15 hours of your CPD requirement can be made up from informal CPD, which can generally either be free or relatively inexpensive (ie buying a business journal/newspapers to read). Reading Chartered Secretary on a regular basis should be recorded as CPD. There is also work-based research and learning via interaction with colleagues.
If you have any queries regarding whether any particular event/activity can be counted as formal CPD please contact us at cpd@icsaglobal.co.uk
